OUR MANASSAS CAMPUS
MEET OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR!
Hello to the Congregation of St. Thomas!
I would like to start off by thanking all of you for the warmest welcome into your church family. It truly feels that I have been part of this community for years! I wanted to take a minute and let you know more about me and my life’s journey that has led me to St Thomas.
I was born and raised in Niskayuna, New York (about 3 hours due north of Manhattan). I started playing the piano at the age of three, and the organ as soon as I could reach the pedals! I grew up attending my family's Catholic Church serving as a Cantor and choir member; then acting as a substitute organist for local churches all through middleschool. I became the Music Director of Freehold Presbyterian Church when I was in 9th grade and stayed there until I graduated high school. After high school I attended George Mason University to pursue a degree in choral music education. While at Mason, I became the Assistant Music Director at New York Ave Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.; where my professor was the director. After my time in D.C. I became the Music Director at Clifton Presbyterian Church; where I have been the last four years. Currently, I am the Director of Choral Music at Osbourn Park High School, and will continue my position there while I am at St Thomas.I reside in Bristow, VA with my wife, Abby, and beautiful new daughter, Chloe Mae. We also share our home with two awesome boxers, Sophie and Ralph, and the true owner of the house, our cat.
As for the future of the music ministry at St Thomas, I have many great ideas that all focus around a central theme, growth!
Joyful Noise Singers, I plan on expanding their repertoire to focus on a wide variety of music; some acapella, and some accompanied. I will also be focusing on the fundamentals of singing and their overall technique. When they leave St Thomas, my hope is that the young adults will continue to sing and enrich the music ministry programs where ever life takes them.
The hand bells are teaching me more than I am teaching them. They are AWESOME! With my degrees in both piano and voice, hand bells was never a class I took in college. My goal with the bells is to increase the number of ringers. Ringing is NOT a scary thing. I will welcome bell ringers at all skill levels; you can just ring one bell!! I also plan to purchase more music for the bells and bring a variety of musical offerings to the worship service week.
My plan for the Chancel Choir is similar to the Bells: more people, more music. I will focus my energy on finding new pieces for the choir to sing. As a choral conductor, I attend many conferences at which new pieces are consistently performed and premiered. I will bring these new and exciting pieces back to St Thomas for use in worship on Sundays. As done in the past, I plan on continuing the Cantata tradition; however, holding off this Easter due to the absence of our wonderful organist. In future years, I want to make the cantatas a larger event in which we hire a small chamber orchestra to augment the service. I also plan to bring in guest instrumentalists and vocalists throughout the year.
Thank you all for your continued patience as I get my bearings with this new and exciting position. Please never hesitate to share any ideas or comments with me in regards to the music at St Thomas. I feel strongly that music augments the worship experience, and I always want to stay on that path. I look forward to years of sharing and growing great music with all of you at St Thomas!
