Demo Day #3

The third demo day took place on March 5, 2022 and the focus was taking down the suspended ceilings in the basement fellowship hall and the new narthex.   By the end of the day, all of the remaining ceiling tiles were removed and all of the cross braces were taken down.   A few days later, the remaining grid work was removed and the ceilings are ready for renovation.  The basement fellowship hall ceiling will be left open and painted white to provide a brighter, open space.  The new narthex ceiling will be drywall.   Thanks to all who disassembled the grid, took down doors, and bagged the trash.  A special thank you to our doughnut donor who kept the team energized.  No surprise that the doughnuts were more popular than the protein bars.   Thank you as well to a couple of trash removal elves who disposed of the debris later in the week.  It is always great when you don’t have to keep moving trash out of the way.

The Wall is Down

It started out surrounded by a stage platform.   It was too well built to go tumbling down.  However, persistence and hard work finally leveled the wall around the old baptism pool and we’re now ready to fill the hole and patch the concrete floor for the new storage area.  Thanks to all who contributed to this milestone (see pics in prior blog posts too).  Special thanks to one industrious worker who hammer drilled holes around the base of the wall to make it easier to separate the wall from the floor.

St Thomas Meets with UM Development Company

On Feburary 1, 2022, St Thomas leaders met with the Virginia United Methodist Development Company (DevCo) regarding financing for the Youth Center renovation.  We learned that our renovation project is right in line with the types of projects financed by DevCo.  DevCo representatives Randy Shelton and Tommy Herndon toured the original church building to see first hand our vision for the Youth Center.  In a meeting following the tour, the church provided a substantial packet of information required for a financing decision.   DevCo was pleased and impressed that St Thomas was able to provide all necessary information for the financing decision and humorously suggested we could provide training for others seeking financing.  At the end of the following week, we learned that Dev Co agreed to finance our renovation project and the detailed loan application process is in full gear.

Youth Service Day is a Hit

On Sunday January 23, St Thomas' Youth Group (The Pack) held a service day and  "demo"nstrated the power of hard work by continuing demolition in the Youth Center.  They completed every task on the day's punch list ahead of schedule!  Taking turns with the sledge hammer on the baptismal font concrete wall was the most popular activity.  One could say it was a hit.

Masks served multiple purposed on this effort and the youth wore gloves and safety goggles when appropriate to prevent injuries.  Thank you to the Youth and supporting adults for all of the hard work.

STUMC Secures Permit to Begin Demolition for Youth Center Renovation

The City of Manassas approved a demolition permit allowing demolition to begin for the Youth Center renovation!  Our first "Demo Day" was held on January 8, 2022 and it was a hit.  Activities included the removal of several structures including the stage surrounding the baptistism pool, some kitchen cabinets, and the closet in the hallway outside the assembly room.  Debris was organized for future removal and salvageable wood was rescued for future use.  Prior to the official demo day, volunteers removed the existing ceiling tiles in preparation for the removal of the suspended ceiling.

The finished products.

Many thanks to all participants.  Coming soon...  Post for Youth Service Day on 1/23/2022!

New Narthex Flooring Installation Underway!

NarthexCarpetIn Website

Our red carpet in the Narthex greeted guests and members of St. Thomas UMC for more than 20 years.  It was time for an update.  Pictured above, the carpet has been removed and the new carpeted seating area in the middle of the narthex has been installed.

NarthexVinylFloors WebsiteSotheby's Flooring, a locally owned business, is seen installing the new narthex flooring surrounding the center carpeted area -- a "barrel" wood-look, luxury vinyl plank (LVP). This beautiful 7x48 inch LVP is 100% waterproof flooring, scratch, stain, and dent resistant, and backed by a 10-year warranty. Its innovative pre-attached backing ensures supreme comfort under foot while its easy-install locking system make this vinyl plank perfect for such a high-traffic area!  Our traditional, red carpet remains in the Sanctuary.

Updated Workroom Underway!

Today, in honor of Ash Wednesday, renovations began on the workroom in the Main Campus building.  Front office volunteer, Pat Dodson helped empty all the contents of all the cabinets and mailboxes while Ron Cambell and Dave Rea focused on patching and painting the walls.  Don Rickerson finished up by moving the networking cable to accomodate the new location for our copier. To God be the glory!

Inside the House

Sanctifying grace is the grace that works within. Here's how an updated youth center can invite our youth to find a home and family within the body of the church.

The Threshold

Justifying grace is the grace that forgives. Here's how an updated youth center can invite our youth to open the door and cross over the threshold to join in the life and body of the church.

The Front Porch

Prevenient Grace is the grace that goes before. Learn how we are working to create a space that is welcoming for our youth.
